Shutting down the Plumbing System

When we do major repairs or installations that call for cutting into the main pipes, we must shut off the incoming water and drain out the existing supply before we can start work.

In order to drain your system efficiently, Plumbers London will have to cut off the house water supply by closing the main stop tap.

We also cut off the gas and electricity to the boiler and any water - heating appliances.

On hot-water central heating, London Plumbers will open the drain tap, located either on the boiler or adjacent pipework, to empty the system. A hosepipe is usually necessary to direct the water to an outside drain, then we open all the radiators valves.

By removing an air vent from a radiator on the top floor - the air will replace the water as it drains down. In case of indirect water supply systems, it is not necessary to drain the central heating if we only carry out repairs or alterations to the basic water supply and drainage piping - as the central heating operates on a separate circuit.

Working floor by floor, starting at the top, Plumbers London will open all hot and cold water taps including all baths, showers and outdoor taps - and flush all W.C.s including the drain water taps on water heater or water treatment equipment you might have in the house - office.

Finally, the Plumbers will open the drain taps on the main supply line in order to release any water that may still remain in the pipes. At this stage the plumbing system is adequately drained - and ready for a new Combination ( Combi boiler ) - Conventional boiler installation or repairs.

When we are finished with the plumbing works - we restore the water supply back on and get rid of any air blockages - the radiators will be air-vented before the plumber will light up the boiler. Taps will splutter when you first used them because of air trapped in the pipes, but soon it will correct itself.
